West Chester Area Bus Drivers Race to Top in 42nd Annual School Bus Safety Competition

WEST CHESTER, PA — Despite dreary weather on Saturday, April 29, West Chester Area School District’s (WCASD) team of bus drivers pulled into Downingtown Area School District’s Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center ready and excited to compete in the Chester County Transportation Association’s 42nd Annual School Bus Safety Competition. Over 90 school bus drivers from districts throughout the Chester County area competed in the event. The competition is comprised of a written test and 10 different driving events that test drivers’ skills and knowledge while maneuvering a school bus.

Three WCASD school bus drivers placed within the top ten in the competition. From On the Go Kids, Chery Vogelsang placed sixth, Joan Cowan of Krapf Buses received seventh place, and also from Krapf Buses, Patti Carey received ninth place. WCASD’s team of bus drivers also placed second in the overall competition. The team included Barb Martz, Supervisor Krapfs West Chester, Dawn Huskey (Krapfs), Thamar Speksnijder (Krapfs), Kira Biddle (Krapfs), Patti Carey (Krapfs), Tammy Rutledge, Joanne Moser (On the Go Kids), Deven Garvey (Krapfs),  Joanne Cowan (Krapfs), Jody AnnTait (Krapfs), Cheryl Vogelsang (On the Go Kids).

“We are incredibly proud of the drivers who participated in the 42nd Annual School Bus Safety Competition this year,” stated Michele Porco, the Manager of Transportation at WCASD. “The dedication shown by both our WCASD team and individual competitors towards safe driving and ongoing driver training is commendable, and their efforts ensure that exceptional service is provided to our district and families,” she added.
