WEST CHESTER, PA — All four of Henderson High School’s Esports teams have secured their spots in the playoffs this season, showcasing their exceptional skill and teamwork. The Overwatch 2, Super Smash Bro’s Ultimate, Rocket League, and Valorant teams, part of the West Chester Area School District, have each made significant strides in their respective competitions.
The Overwatch 2 team, in its first year, advanced to the first playoff round under the leadership of Captain Joshua Marnien. Despite being eliminated, the team displayed great potential and set a strong foundation for future success.
The Super Smash Bro’s Ultimate team, led by Captain Russel Platt, narrowly missed victory in a thrilling 5-player round competition. They reached the second round, missing out on the win by just one point, leaving fans eager for their continued success in upcoming seasons.
Dominating the regular season with an impressive 7-1 record, the Rocket League team, under Captain Giuliano DiLiberto, secured the top spot in their division and ranked 4th in Pennsylvania. They are set to compete in the second round on December 13, following a first-round bye.
The Valorant team, under Captain Joey D’Antonio, mirrored Rocket League’s success with a 7-1 record in the regular season. Standout player Will Geary drew attention and admiration despite some team setbacks. The Valorant team also earned a first-round bye and will play in the second round on December 14.
Jamie Wagner, advisor and Henderson teacher, expressed immense pride in the teams’ achievements. “These young athletes have showcased not only their gaming skills but also the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship,” said Wagner.
Competing against over 50 schools in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Esports Association (PIEA), the teams have made a remarkable impact under the guidance of Wagner and co-advisor Dan Coley.
As the playoffs continue, the WCASD community eagerly anticipates the teams’ continued success and supports them in their quest for victory.
