DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Demonstrating a robust commitment to community service, Downingtown High School West‘s (DHSW) Pickleball Club successfully raised $460 for Bringing Hope Home, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting families battling cancer. The funds will directly benefit the Light of Hope Family Program, which offers vital financial assistance for essential household expenses to families navigating the challenges of cancer treatment.
This initiative, spearheaded by the students of DHSW and supported by the school community, featured a series of engaging pickleball matches designed to encourage broad student participation and foster a spirit of teamwork and athleticism. The event not only highlighted the importance of providing support to families in need but also reinforced the values of empathy and community involvement among the participants.
Key figures in organizing this impactful fundraiser included Christopher Heffernan, a dedicated student teacher within the history department, and Michelle Mahan, the club’s advisor, whose guidance was instrumental in the initiative’s success.
Expressing her pride in the students’ dedication, Michelle Mahan remarked, “I am incredibly proud of our students for stepping up and making a difference. Their enthusiasm and dedication to raising funds for Bringing Hope Home shows how much they care about giving back to the community and supporting families in need.”
Further emphasizing the educational benefits of the event, Susan Tancredi, a Spanish teacher and Curriculum Leader at DHSW, noted, “This fundraiser goes beyond sports and physical activity; it’s about building character and empathy in our students. It teaches them the importance of community involvement and demonstrates how small acts of kindness can have a significant impact.”
Justin Brown, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Downingtown Area School District (DASD), lauded the students’ efforts, stating, “The pickleball club’s fundraising initiative aligns with our district’s mission to foster inclusive and supportive communities. By supporting Bringing Hope Home, these students are helping to provide hope and relief to families facing the toughest challenges, and I’m proud to see our students leading with compassion.”
The successful execution of this fundraiser by DHSW’s students highlights the power of student-driven initiatives in fostering community connection and support. It serves as a testament to the positive impact that collective efforts can have in nurturing a culture of generosity and empathy within educational environments.
