UWCHLAN TWP, PA — In a heartwarming initiative, students at Downingtown Area School District‘s Shamona Creek Elementary School are making Election Day a little brighter for Chester County’s poll workers. As November 5th approaches, these young students have crafted vibrant thank-you cards, set to be distributed across the county’s 230 polling stations.

The project, led by first, second, and fourth graders, aims to express appreciation to the nearly 2,000 poll workers dedicated to ensuring the smooth operation of the election. Chester County Voter Services Director Karen Barsoum and Commissioners’ Chair Josh Maxwell joined the students in Julie Dimino’s art class to contribute to the colorful cards and acknowledge the students’ efforts.

“Having the students color these notes of thanks will brighten the day of the thousands of poll workers who will be based at our precincts from early morning to late at night on Election Day,” remarked Karen Barsoum. She added that the initiative also served as a valuable opportunity to educate the students on the significance of voting in the democratic process.

The effort comes at a crucial time as Chester County Voter Services is in full swing preparing for the upcoming election. From conducting training sessions for poll workers to organizing mail-in ballots and setting up election satellite offices, the department is ensuring that every voting avenue is ready and accessible. The creation of these thank-you cards adds a personal touch, reinforcing community spirit and support for those who play a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of the election.

Art teacher Julie Dimino expressed her pride in the students’ contribution, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the volunteers’ hard work. “The students and I enjoyed showing our appreciation to our local volunteers. We wanted to illustrate our gratitude for all their volunteer efforts in the 2024 elections,” she stated.
