DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Flyers Recess program, a collaborative initiative by the Philadelphia Flyers and Wegmans, recently transformed a regular school day at Lionville Elementary School (LES) into a dynamic celebration of physical fitness and teamwork. This innovative program underscored the significance of inclusive play and sports as essential components of education, reinforcing their power to unite students from diverse backgrounds.
Flyers Recess delivered an engaging experience to LES through an interactive assembly that adopted a game show format. Students were introduced to the thrilling world of hockey and the legacy of the Flyers, while being educated on critical values such as teamwork, physical fitness, and community involvement. The event was enriched by the presence of Flyers staff and notable figures, including former players Riley Cote and Bob Kelly, in-arena host Everett Jackson, members of the Flyers Ice Team, and the ever-popular mascot, Gritty. This assembly was not only entertaining but also educational, leaving a lasting impression on the young audience.
A significant aspect of the Flyers Recess initiative is its commitment to accessibility. By providing schools with essential hockey gear, the program aims to eliminate financial obstacles, allowing all students to participate in the sport. Justin Brown, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Downingtown Area School District, emphasized the program’s impact, stating, “Hockey is a powerful symbol of inclusivity that transcends socioeconomic boundaries. Flyers Recess exemplifies our commitment to providing every child with the opportunity to participate, learn, and thrive through this dynamic sport.”
In support of the program, LES was generously supplied with two pop-up goals, 40 hockey sticks, a case of balls, and 40 Flyers-branded reversible pinnies. Principal Shelda Perry expressed her appreciation for the initiative, remarking, “Flyers Recess not only sparked excitement among our students but reinforced the values of teamwork, physical fitness, and community engagement. This event aligns perfectly with our school’s focus on holistic development.”
The program didn’t stop at equipment. Each student received Flyers-themed school supplies, such as folders and pencils, and two tickets to a Flyers home game, granting them a direct connection to the sport.
Inspired by the day’s success, Lionville Elementary School plans to integrate street hockey into its physical education curriculum, extending the benefits of the Flyers Recess program. This integration aims to promote lifelong wellness among students, ensuring that the positive impact of the initiative continues to resonate throughout the school community.
