DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Bradford Heights Elementary School welcomed a special delivery this week as the Philadelphia Flyers, Wegmans, and the Flyers’ beloved mascot Gritty unveiled a new branded refrigerator as part of the Food and Fridges program. The initiative aims to provide students with access to healthy snacks to support their well-being and learning.

During the event, Flyers and Wegmans representatives helped stock the refrigerator and the school’s pantry with nutritious snacks tailored to enhance their BRIDGE after-school program. Students pitched in alongside Gritty, sharing laughs and filling the fridge to kick off the program’s benefits.

“We are so thankful for Wegmans and the Flyers. The donations to our Building Relationships in DASD to Grow Education (BRIDGE) after-school program are invaluable. This investment in our students’ future will have a lasting impact,” said Bradford Heights Principal Dr. Ilana Shipe.

The BRIDGE program, sponsored by the Downingtown Community Education Foundation, offers academic and social support to students by providing more opportunities for engagement beyond the classroom.

The Food and Fridges initiative, made possible through a collaboration between the Flyers, Wegmans, and the Downingtown Area School District’s Office of Student Relations and School Climate (SRSC), highlights a strong commitment to student success. “It’s an amazing community partnership with Wegmans and the Flyers organization. The Food and Fridges program is going to have a tremendous impact on our students and provide valuable support to our after-school program,” said Justin Brown, SRSC Director.

The event spotlighted the importance of community efforts between organizations and schools in enriching student experiences and fostering academic growth. Bradford Heights Elementary extended its heartfelt thanks to all involved for making this initiative a reality.
