DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Downingtown High School West (DHSW) hosted its inaugural “Everybody Belongs” basketball game, an event designed to highlight inclusion and foster a sense of community. Organized by the DHSW Best Buddies Club in partnership with the Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team, the evening celebrated connection, friendship, and the values of a supportive school culture.

The game reflected the mission of Best Buddies, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through friendships, employment, and leadership opportunities. The event aimed to create an environment where every student feels welcomed, respected, and valued.

Participants from the Best Buddies Club played a significant role in the evening, leading the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, engaging in a halftime shooting contest, and enthusiastically cheering for the basketball team. Their involvement embodied the night’s central theme of unity and belonging.

“I’m so proud of our team for partnering with Best Buddies to host this inaugural event,” said Mike Young, Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach. “Tonight was all about building connections and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome. It was a truly special night for all of us.”

Justin Brown, Director of Student Relations and School Climate, highlighted the event’s broader impact on the school. “This event exemplifies the heart of what we strive for—a school environment where every student feels they belong,” he said. Brown also thanked staff members for their dedication to creating a more inclusive and welcoming community, recognizing the long-term value of their efforts.

Life Skills Teacher and Best Buddies Club Advisor, Chris Cornine, echoed this sentiment. “A community grows where you invest in it,” she noted. “Our ‘Everybody Belongs’ night was designed to encourage students to engage with their community in a meaningful and inclusive way.”

The event drew strong community support, with a wide turnout demonstrating a shared commitment to inclusion. The “Everybody Belongs” game left a lasting impression on students, staff, and families, making it a meaningful step toward a more unified school culture.
