DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Downingtown Area School District (DASD) is marking Black History Month with a series of educational and artistic activities aimed at highlighting the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history.

Students and staff will engage in programs that explore the lives and legacies of prominent Black figures, examine works by acclaimed authors, and participate in creative performances, including song, dance, and poetry. These activities are designed to foster understanding and appreciation for African-American history and its continuing impact on society.

A highlight of this year’s observance will be a visit from award-winning actor and singer Leslie Odom Jr., who will share personal insights on achieving goals and perseverance. Additionally, dancer and choreographer Manny Chacon will present a step show, showcasing the evolution of dance traditions with African cultural roots.

Justin Brown, Director of Student Relations and School Climate, underscored the importance of recognizing Black History Month as part of the district’s broader commitment to diversity and inclusion. “Black History Month is an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable contributions of African Americans throughout history while also recognizing the ongoing work we must do to ensure every student feels valued, seen, and heard,” Brown said.

These celebrations align with DASD’s efforts to create a positive educational environment where all students feel empowered and included.
