DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Downingtown Area School District (DASD) is dedicating April to Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, highlighting its mission to build an inclusive community that values neurodiversity and encourages understanding.
Autism awareness efforts have gained international momentum since the United Nations designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day in 2007. Similarly, National Autism Awareness Month, initiated by the Autism Society during the 1970s, continues to inspire educational and advocacy programs worldwide, and DASD is aligning its initiatives with this global movement.
Throughout the month, DASD schools are hosting a variety of events designed to foster a sense of community and promote empathy. Activities include district-wide events such as the Eagles Coin Challenge, which supports the Eagles Autism Foundation, and hands-on student engagements like the “Bubbles of Kindness” activity. School assemblies and other opportunities will create spaces for important conversations about neurodiversity.
The DASD School Climate and Student Engagement Teams, in collaboration with Director of Student Relations and School Climate, Justin Brown, are leading these efforts. Brown emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating, “These events provide valuable opportunities for students and staff to celebrate neurodiversity, build understanding, and foster connections. Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month is a time to recognize and uplift the unique strengths of every student.”
Through its programming, the district aims to strengthen the partnership between educators, students, and families while promoting dialogue around creating classrooms and communities where everyone feels a sense of belonging. DASD remains committed to ensuring its schools celebrate individuality and foster an environment of acceptance year-round.
