WEST GROVE, PA — The Avon Grove School District (AGSD) announced Thursday, March 21, the appointment of Matthew Berkheiser as the new assistant principal of AGHS. Berkheiser steps into the role following the retirement of Gary Benasutti, who has been a pillar at the high school for 24 years.

Berkheiser is no stranger to educational leadership, having accumulated a wealth of experience in Cecil County Public Schools since 2009. His career there spanned several key positions, including acting assistant principal at Elkton High School and special education teacher. His commitment to education was highlighted when he was nominated for the 2020 Cecil County Teacher of the Year Award, showcasing his dedication to fostering academic excellence and supporting students.

Perhaps most notably, Berkheiser brings a personal connection to his new role. As a resident of Avon Grove and a parent of students within the district, his investment in the community runs deep. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to serve in the district where we live and where our kids go to school, and hope that I can make a difference for the students of Avon Grove while in this role,” Berkheiser expressed, signaling a commitment to leveraging his professional and personal insights for the betterment of the school.

The school district’s leadership shares Berkheiser’s enthusiasm. Dr. M. Christopher Marchese, Superintendent of Schools, praised Berkheiser’s track record and the perspective he brings to the assistant principal position. “Mr. Berkheiser’s experience as an educator and administrator will certainly benefit the students of Avon Grove and we’re very fortunate to have someone of his caliber joining our team,” Marchese said. He underscored the importance of building strong relationships with students, a task for which he believes Berkheiser is exceptionally suited.
