WEST GROVE, PA — On Thursday, May 23, the Avon Grove School District (AGSD) board of directors approved the appointment of Anton Ocepek as the new assistant principal at Avon Grove High School. He will fill the vacancy left by Angie Houghton, who is retiring after serving the district since 2001.
Ocepek comes with a wealth of experience in education. He previously taught physics and chemistry at the Downingtown STEM Academy and Central Bucks West High School. During his tenure, he gained extensive experience in co-teaching, hybrid learning, and cyber instruction. He also held leadership roles such as tenth grade team leader, curriculum developer, and workshop facilitator. In these roles, he led initiatives to enhance student success, align curricula with state standards, and foster professional development for staff.
In 2023, Ocepek received the prestigious DuPont Excellence in Teaching Award. This award recognizes extraordinary teaching skills, effective communication of STEM inquiry and learning, and a talent for motivating and supporting students.
Beyond the classroom, Ocepek has shown exceptional leadership in science research. He served as the science fair director for multiple elementary schools and coordinated student participation in regional and state-level science fairs. He also forged valuable community partnerships, securing mentorships and research opportunities for students with local universities and industry professionals.
At the board meeting, Ocepek expressed his enthusiasm for his new role. “I am very excited to start working with the students next year and look forward to collaborating with the faculty and staff as well,” he said.
Ocepek will begin as assistant principal at Avon Grove High School on July 1, 2024.
The appointment of Ocepek is significant for several reasons. His background in STEM education and his commitment to student success align with the district’s goals of providing high-quality education. His experience with hybrid and cyber instruction is particularly relevant as schools continue to navigate the challenges of modern education.
Moreover, Ocepek’s leadership in science research and his ability to build community partnerships will benefit Avon Grove High School. These skills can open new opportunities for students, such as access to mentorships and real-world research experiences. This aligns with current educational trends that emphasize hands-on learning and community involvement.
The transition from Houghton to Ocepek marks a new chapter for Avon Grove High School. Houghton’s long tenure has been marked by dedication and service, and Ocepek’s arrival brings fresh energy and innovative ideas. His diverse experiences and proven track record suggest he will be an asset to the school community.
In summary, Anton Ocepek’s appointment as assistant principal represents a positive step for Avon Grove High School. His expertise in STEM education, leadership skills, and enthusiasm for student success make him well-suited for the role. As the school prepares for the upcoming academic year, the community looks forward to the contributions he will bring.
