WEST CHESTER, PA — Two illustrious alumnae of West Chester University (WCU) were honored as Drum Majors for Justice at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Brunch on January 26. The honor recognizes extraordinary achievements in their respective fields, as well as the significant impact they’ve made on their communities.
Nicole Barkley-Jones ’99, a highly skilled attorney with 20 years of experience in legal and higher education administration, currently serves as the inaugural associate director of Title IX Operations in Princeton University’s Office of the Provost. With a robust career across numerous institutions, Barkley-Jones’ work is particularly notable for her advocacy and protection of women and children affected by violence.
A native Philadelphian and 2011 Legacy of Leadership Award recipient, Barkley-Jones continues to invest her time into mentoring prospective attorneys of color and advocating for causes she passionately believes in.
Milena Oberti Lanz M’13, another distinguished WCU alumna, has led the Maternal and Child Health Consortium of Chester County (MCHC) as executive director since 2016. Under her leadership, MCHC has consistently received the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO) Seal of Excellence, a true testament to their commitment to accountability, transparency, and efficacious management.
In her role, Lanz oversees the MCHC’s mission to deliver healthcare access, prenatal health support, and kindergarten readiness, serving over 5,000 individuals annually. A champion for underserved children and families, Lanz’s passion extends beyond her executive role to her collaboration with WCU’s Bachelor of Science in Public Health internship program and her dedication to mentoring upcoming non-profit professionals.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Brunch, organized annually by WCU, celebrates the social justice legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Drum Majors for Justice award, inspired by one of King’s sermons, honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the service of others, much like the drum majors in a marching band who set the pace and direction for the rest.
This year’s recipients, Barkley-Jones and Lanz, embody the spirit of the Drum Major for Justice award and continue to set an inspiring pace in their fields, leading the march for justice, equality, and service to the community.
