WEST CHESTER, PA — Dr. Terry Plank, an acclaimed volcanologist and geochemist, will present West Chester University’s Second Annual Mather Scholar Lecture on Wednesday, March 26, at 6 p.m. in Room 108 of the Sciences & Engineering Center and The Commons (SECC). The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Plank, a professor at Columbia University and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, is widely recognized for her groundbreaking work in studying magmas and their role in the plate tectonic cycle. Her research spans some of the world’s most active volcanic regions, including Alaska, Iceland, and Nicaragua. Through her studies, she examines magma composition, the recycling of materials at subduction zones, and the role of water in volcanic eruptions.
A member of the National Academy of Sciences and a recipient of prestigious awards, including the MacArthur Fellowship, Dr. Plank has contributed to leading scientific journals such as Nature and Nature Geoscience. Her innovative work continues to advance understanding of the deep forces shaping the Earth’s surface.
This annual lecture honors Sandra “Sandie” F. Pritchard Mather, a dedicated WCU alumna, professor emerita, and renowned geologist, whose contributions have left a lasting legacy at the university. Attendees can expect an engaging evening exploring the hidden dynamics of Earth’s fiery forces.
