WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester University (WCU) will host a day of action on March 4, 2025, organized by the university’s chapter of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF). The events include a rally and a teach-in to oppose proposed federal education funding cuts, emphasizing their potential impact on students, families, and educational institutions throughout Pennsylvania.
The rally, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on the WCU Quad, will feature remarks by State Representative Chris Pielli, D-Chester; State Senator Carolyn Comitta; and West Chester Mayor Lillian DeBaptiste. Faculty and staff will also join attendees in a public show of support for students and against the proposed reductions.
The teach-in will take place at the Sykes Student Union from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and will include information sessions addressing critical topics such as the proposed changes to the federal Department of Education, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and Pell Grants. The teach-in aims to provide students and attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the potential consequences of the proposed cuts on education and the economy.
Rep. Pielli emphasized the importance of standing with students and faculty to prioritize investment in education over fiscal policies that he described as detrimental to hardworking families. He stated, “The proposed federal education funding cuts will impact current and future generations and will have a devastating impact on our economy and national security for years to come.”
APSCUF, which represents approximately 5,000 faculty and coaches across Pennsylvania’s State System universities, including West Chester, has mobilized this effort as part of a broader statewide day of action. Other State System campuses participating in the initiative include Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, and others.
These events spotlight the urgency in addressing the proposed funding reductions and rallying broader advocacy for resources necessary to sustain educational opportunities. Attendees are encouraged to participate in both the rally and the teach-in, uniting to protect the future of public education.
