WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester University is set to host an enlightening event as Dr. Kyle J. Boyer, an esteemed educator, minister, and advocate for social justice, delivers the Fifth Annual Dr. Clifford E. DeBaptiste Frederick Douglass Institute Lecture. Scheduled for October 10 at 3 p.m. in the Philips Autograph Library of the Philips Memorial Building, this lecture promises to engage and educate on the theme “America’s Alternative: Embracing the Prophetic Possibilities of Frederick Douglass.”
Dr. Boyer, a native of Chester County, brings a wealth of experience and insight to this event. Currently serving as the pastor of Mount Carmel Church of God in Christ in West Chester, he has been a prominent figure in local religious and educational communities. His academic journey includes degrees from George Washington University, the University of Pennsylvania, and United Lutheran Seminary, culminating in an ordained ministry that began in 2006 under Bishop Benjamin J. Ravenel.
His professional contributions extend beyond the pulpit. Dr. Boyer has been actively involved in youth ministry at various levels and has held leadership roles, including vice president of the West Chester Ministerial Alliance and membership in the Main Line Black Interdenominational Minister’s Alliance. As an author, his works such as “Reflections for the Call: A Devotional for Young Preachers” and “The Prince, the Priests & the Prophets: The Need for Prophetic Leadership in America” reflect his dedication to fostering leadership and social change.
This lecture is part of the Frederick Douglass Institute’s Annual DeBaptiste-Douglass Lecture Series, a tribute to Frederick Douglass, the renowned abolitionist, orator, and statesman. This series not only honors Douglass’s legacy but also serves as a platform to explore contemporary social justice issues by drawing lessons from history. It is supported by the generosity of Dr. Clifford DeBaptiste, the first African American mayor of West Chester Borough, who is celebrated for his commitment to education.
Dr. Boyer’s lecture is anticipated to inspire reflection and dialogue, as it aligns with the Frederick Douglass Institute’s mission to leverage historical insights to address modern challenges. This event is an opportunity for the community to engage with thoughtful discourse on the potential for transformative leadership and the enduring relevance of Frederick Douglass’s vision for America.
