MEDIA, PA — Delaware County Community College (DCCC) will celebrate Black History Month with two lectures that spotlight the historical and cultural contributions of Black cowboys and the concept of intersectionality. These events, part of DCCC’s annual “Dialogues for Diversity” series, will take place on the Marple Campus and are free and open to the public, with Livestream options available.
The first lecture, scheduled for Thursday, February 13 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., will feature Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Ron Tarver, MFA. He will explore the historical significance of Black cowboys in America, based on his acclaimed book, The Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America. A retrospective built on three decades of work, the book captures the lives of Black cowboys and cowgirls, their ranching culture, and their impact on American history. Tarver, who spent 32 years as a staff photojournalist at The Philadelphia Inquirer and now teaches at Swarthmore College, has earned broad recognition for his compelling work, which is part of prominent collections like the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Art.
The second lecture, led by Dr. Durell M. Callier on Tuesday, February 18 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., will focus on the intersectionality of identities, particularly the interplay of blackness with other aspects of identity. An associate professor of Africana Studies at the University of Delaware, Dr. Callier’s research examines the lived experiences of Black youth and their communities. He has authored two books and numerous academic articles on this topic.
Both events will take place on DCCC’s Marple Campus, located at 901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA 19063, and are supported by the Center for Equity and Social Justice. For more information or to register, visit dccc.edu/cesj.
These lectures highlight DCCC’s effort to foster a deeper understanding of diversity and equity. They offer a valuable opportunity for the public to engage with groundbreaking work that connects history, culture, and community experiences. Looking ahead, these events promise to inspire meaningful conversations about America’s diverse heritage and the ongoing efforts to honor and explore it.
