MEDIA, PA — Delaware County Community College (DCCC) is set to host the concluding session of its enlightening Spring 2024 “Dialogues for Diversity” series. Scheduled for May 8, 2024, at 11 a.m., this session promises an engaging discussion on “An Asian Proposal for Overcoming Racism: Perspectival Shift from Dualism to Nondualism.” The event, which is virtual and free to the public, aims to shed light on complex concepts through accessible dialogue.

The lecture features esteemed speaker Shigenori Nagatomo, Ph.D., a distinguished professor of Comparative Philosophy and East Asian Buddhism at Temple University. Dr. Nagatomo will introduce attendees to the intriguing contrast between dualism and nondualism—two conceptual paradigms that shape our perception of life and interactions with others. He will elaborate on how dualism, the belief in binary oppositions, can perpetuate racism and why nondualism, which recognizes the interconnectedness of all things, offers a path toward understanding and inclusivity.

In his presentation, Dr. Nagatomo will draw upon his extensive research and expertise to highlight how adopting a nondualistic viewpoint can not only diminish racism but also enrich our lives and societies by fostering a deeper sense of unity and empathy. Register on Zoom or at dccc.edu/cesj.

The “Dialogues for Diversity” series, initiated by DCCC’s Center for Equity and Social Justice in 2020, has been a beacon for promoting thoughtful conversation around diversity, equity, and social justice issues. By inviting experts like Dr. Nagatomo to share their insights, the series encourages open dialogue, education, and transformative change aimed at achieving equity and justice for all individuals.

This final lecture of the Spring 2024 series represents an opportunity for participants to engage with complex philosophical concepts in a manner that is both understandable and relevant to contemporary social issues. Through this and similar events, DCCC continues to underline its commitment to creating spaces for meaningful discussion that can inspire community members to think critically and act compassionately.
