MEDIA, PA — Delaware County Community College (DCCC) is taking significant strides in workforce development with the announcement of its new Southeast Center in Drexel Hill, set to open in January 2026. This state-of-the-art facility will provide training aligned with regional economic needs, offering programs in Skilled Trades and Advanced Technology designed to prepare students for Pennsylvania’s High Priority Occupations.
Housed at the former Archbishop Prendergast High School, the Southeast Center aims to address workforce gaps in the region, generating a stronger local economy and equipping over 11,000 qualified workers with in-demand skills. The center’s Kelleher Annex for Workforce Development will expand access to programs such as Automotive Technology, Construction Management, and certifications for electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and welders.
“We’re creating opportunities for our residents to gain skills and access well-paying jobs while meeting employer demands,” said Laura Chisholm, Ed.D., DCCC’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement. “Ultimately, our campaign is about enhancing the student experience, strengthening the local economy, and elevating DCCC’s impact in the region.”
Inspiring Success Stories
Shawn Smith of Philadelphia exemplifies the impact of DCCC’s programs. While juggling a full-time job, part-time studies, and raising three children, Smith earned an Electrical Certificate in 2023, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. His dedication paid off as he now works full-time as a maintenance electrician.
“It was challenging, but I was determined to see it through,” said Smith. “I was able to apply what I was learning in the classroom to my day job. Enrolling at DCCC was the best decision I have ever made.”
Similarly, Sarah Alkurdi, a Mathematics and Natural Science major from Bryn Mawr, gained invaluable hands-on experience during a summer internship at the prestigious Wistar Institute, where she participated in biomedical research.
“It was an unforgettable experience and opened my eyes to the world of medical research,” said Alkurdi. She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Drexel University.
Strategic Partnerships
DCCC continues to strengthen ties with the business community through partnerships with companies like Lockheed Martin, Sunoco, and Penn Machine Works, ensuring students receive real-world training aligned with employer needs. Additionally, 94% of DCCC career and technical graduates work in fields related to their studies.
The College also builds long-term economic impact through its $7.5 million Building Community Campaign, which invites businesses and philanthropists to contribute through naming opportunities or targeted sponsorships. To learn more about DCCC’s Building Community campaign, visit dccc.edu/campaign.
