MEDIA, PA — The spirit of achievement and the transformative power of education took center stage as Delaware County Community College saw more than 1,200 students proudly graduate with associate degrees and certificates. In a day filled with hope and pride, the College hosted two distinct Commencement ceremonies on Thursday, May 16, at West Chester University’s Hollinger Field House.
The morning ceremony honored graduates from the Allied Health & Nursing, STEM, and Workforce & Economic Development divisions, while the afternoon ceremony celebrated the achievements of graduates from the Business, Computing & Social Science, as well as the Communications, Arts & Humanities divisions. It was a moment of unity, where diverse backgrounds converged with a shared purpose of pursuing knowledge for a brighter future.
Student Commencement speaker Edison Hong of Upper Darby, the son of Chinese immigrants, encapsulated the essence of the day with his inspiring words, “We share the same goal of pursuing better opportunities through education at a more affordable cost.” Hong’s journey from high school to earning an associate degree in Computer Science and Business Administration at DCCC, followed by his acceptance to Georgia Institute of Technology and recognition with the prestigious 2024 Hites Transfer Scholarship, exemplifies the resilience and dedication of community college students.
Reflecting on the grit and determination displayed by the graduating class, alumnus and Commencement speaker Frederick Shegog ’20 of Drexel Hill commended the graduates for their unwavering commitment to their academic pursuits despite facing personal challenges. Shegog’s own path—from battling homelessness and substance abuse to achieving academic excellence at DCCC and beyond—serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and perseverance.
Leading the ceremonies, Marta Yera Cronin, Ed.D., the College’s president, highlighted the enduring impact of education across generations, emphasizing how the graduates’ dedication serves as a beacon of inspiration for their families. Board of Trustees Chair Kevin Scott, Esq., lauded the graduates for their dedication and sacrifices, acknowledging the unwavering commitment it takes to pursue academic success while juggling various responsibilities.
As the cheers and celebrations echoed through the halls, the Commencement ceremonies captured the essence of triumph, resilience, and the limitless possibilities that education offers. The graduates of Delaware County Community College stand as shining examples of perseverance and excellence, embodying the true essence of success against all odds.
