WEST CHESTER, PA — Students from middle and elementary schools across Chester County brought the works of Shakespeare to life at the 35th annual Shakespeare Festival. Held on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at the Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre at West Chester University, the event showcased modern interpretations of classic plays.

Organized by the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) and sponsored by CCRES Educational and Behavioral Health Services, the festival celebrates Shakespearean literature and offers students a platform to perform while adhering to the main themes of the original works. The audience also enjoyed insights from a Master of Revelry, played by professional actor Frank Munroe, who shared facts about Shakespeare and his Elizabethan world.

“Theater is great for students, especially younger children,” said Munroe. “It builds self-confidence, teaches teamwork, and helps them figure out who they are. It’s a valuable experience.”

Participants performed their adaptations and then watched others, learning from their peers. Though not competitive, the festival presented individual and group awards to recognize standout performances.

Savannah Riberio, a seventh grader at Penns Grove Middle School, highlighted how observing others helped her refine her own act. “Be loud, have fun, and don’t let others tell you what you can and can’t do,” she advised.

Jeremy Hammer, drama director at Penns Grove, praised the festival’s supportive environment. “What I love is that it’s so welcoming, even if you make mistakes. Everyone wants to see you succeed. It’s an awesome festival,” he said.

The Chester County Shakespeare Festival annually gathers over 300 talented students from across the county. Each school is given 20 minutes to perform their adaptation, creating a diverse and enriching experience for all involved.
