DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Clariza Hernandez has set a remarkable precedent by becoming the second student in Philadelphia Virtual Academy’s (PVA) history to graduate high school while simultaneously earning her associate’s degree from Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). Her achievement underscores the success of the partnership between Brandywine Virtual Academy (BVA), PVA, and HACC, which offers dual enrollment opportunities to motivated students.
Since 2017, BVA’s collaboration with HACC has allowed high school students to earn college credits as they complete their diploma requirements. Students benefit from access to college courses, books, and resources, giving them a head start on higher education. Clariza, who pursued communications at HACC, credits the program for enabling her to gain early exposure to college coursework. “My HACC courses have given me the opportunity to familiarize myself with college courses and have allowed me to get a head start,” she remarked.
Despite the rigorous demands, including aligning courses to meet both high school and college credit criteria, Clariza persevered. Her efforts included maintaining a full college course load beginning her junior year and completing accelerated winter and summer terms. Among her favorite courses was intercultural communication, which she described as an enriching virtual experience.
Reflecting on her accomplishment, Clariza urged students to “take advantage of everything offered to you. The dual enrollment program has allowed me to earn my degree at the age of 18 with no financial burden.” She also expressed gratitude for the support of PVA staff, singling out one mentor, Ms. Ricci, for her guidance.
Dr. Jeanne McCarthy, director of BVA, highlighted the program’s significance by stating, “Dual enrollment is a transformative educational opportunity…we’re empowering [students] to get a head start on their future. We are so proud of Clariza!”
Clariza plans to build on her success by pursuing a bachelor’s degree at a four-year university. Her story not only reflects her determination but also showcases the life-changing potential of dual enrollment programs to prepare students for academic and professional success.
