DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Gary Otis, a lifelong member of the Wyalusing Area School District community, has taken the helm as superintendent, completing a remarkable career progression from biology teacher to district leader.
A former student of the district, Otis returned to Wyalusing after college, serving as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal. When the superintendent position opened, local support propelled him into a competitive national selection process, culminating in Otis being named Acting Superintendent in December 2023.
Faced with the need for a Superintendent Letter of Eligibility (LoE), Otis chose the Chester County Intermediate Unit’s (CCIU) fully remote program in partnership with West Chester University. The program’s flexibility and focus on real-world leadership made it an ideal solution for his demanding schedule.
“I loved that the courses were taught by sitting superintendents. They had real-life experience you can’t replace,” Otis explained. He highlighted the program’s structured pacing, one-course-at-a-time model, and practical coursework as key factors in preparing him for the demands of his new role.
Dave Humes, coordinator of program development for CCIU, praised Otis’s commitment to growth and leadership development. “His success is our success,” said Humes. “It’s rewarding to help foster a pipeline of leaders in Pennsylvania education.”
Since completing the program, Otis has been an advocate for the CCIU LoE Program, recommending it to colleagues pursuing educational leadership roles. “Unequivocally, I always steer them to the CCIU program,” he said.
Otis now leads the Wyalusing Area School District with the same dedication and community spirit that has defined his career. His story stands as an example of effective leadership development and the power of local roots shaping future leaders.
