MALVERN, PA — The Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), in collaboration with Immaculata University, recently hosted a compelling evening with former NBA player Chris Herren to mark the start of Mental Health Awareness Month. The free event, titled “A Night with Chris Herren,” delivered a raw and inspirational message of hope and recovery, resonating deeply with the hundreds in attendance.

Herren, who has been in recovery for more than 16 years, shared his personal struggles with addiction and the profound impact it had on his life and those around him. Reflecting on his upbringing in Massachusetts and the challenges of growing up in a home affected by substance abuse, Herren spoke candidly about his experiences with alcohol and drug addiction and his path to sobriety.

“The Chris Herren event was one of the most powerful evenings we’ve ever experienced,” said Andrew Reigle, special education supervisor at the CCIU. “Chris’s story was raw, honest, and deeply humane, and it resonated in a way that left the entire room moved and inspired.”

Herren’s presentation also highlighted his work to support individuals and families struggling with addiction. He founded the Herren Project, a nonprofit offering free services such as recovery coaching and family support. Additionally, he established Herren Wellness, a comprehensive recovery center in Massachusetts that provides long-term wellness tools through life coaching, holistic therapies, and family care.

With his honest and direct approach, Herren encouraged attendees to rethink addiction and recovery, emphasizing the importance of compassion and understanding. The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, offering a chance for the audience to engage with Herren and his message on a personal level.

Through this initiative, the CCIU underscored its dedication to promoting mental health and well-being in Chester County. “Bringing Chris Herren to our community was more than just an event—it was a catalyst for reflection, conversation, and hope,” said Reigle. “The success of the night speaks to the hunger people have for authenticity and the power of shared stories.”

The evening represented a powerful step in raising awareness about addiction and mental health issues while fostering resilience and hope in the community. Moving forward, the CCIU plans to continue prioritizing mental health by hosting similar events and ensuring access to essential resources for those in need.
