DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Chester County College Fair, held Monday at United Sports in Downingtown, offered local families and students an invaluable opportunity to explore a wide array of postsecondary educational options. Organized by the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) and sponsored by CCRES Educational and Behavioral Health Services, the event attracted over 900 attendees and featured representatives from more than 130 colleges and universities.
This annual event serves as a critical platform for high school students to engage with a diverse spectrum of educational institutions. Jay Della Ragione, special events coordinator for the CCIU, emphasized the fair’s comprehensive offerings, which include two-year community colleges, military programs, nursing schools, and trade schools. “The fair empowers students to plan their school tours and speak directly with college representatives, many of whom are alumni, providing first-hand insights into their institutions,” Della Ragione stated.
A standout feature of this year’s fair was the Transitioning Beyond High School program, which commenced an hour before the main event. Tailored for students with disabilities and their families, this program provided attendees with detailed information on inclusive higher education programs and access to disability supports. Meaghan Stolnis, a training and consultation specialist for the CCIU, highlighted the importance of the program, noting its role in facilitating one-on-one discussions and resource-sharing for individuals with special needs.
Kathleen Eckinger, who worked alongside Stolnis to coordinate the early hour session, remarked on the significant turnout and the session’s meaningful impact on participants. “The transition to postsecondary education can be overwhelming, but this session offered essential guidance and support,” Eckinger added.
The event not only broadened horizons but also encouraged students to hone their networking skills and clarify their educational aspirations. Attendee Maria Bednarz shared her experience, noting how the fair expanded her son Ronnie’s prospective college list significantly. Jackie Mavrelos, a gifted education teacher, praised the event for its ability to help students discover their interests and prepare for future educational endeavors.
Local institutions such as Bryn Mawr College, Delaware County Community College, and West Chester University were present, alongside several out-of-state universities such as Miami University, Roanoke College, and University of New Hampshire This extensive representation provided students with a unique opportunity to explore options from across the nation in a single evening.
The Chester County College Fair continues to be a pivotal event for students and families navigating the complexities of college selection. By offering diverse educational opportunities and fostering engaging interactions, the fair empowers students to make informed decisions about their academic futures, reinforcing its role as an essential resource in the community.
