World Premiere Documentary Unveils the Life of the West Chester Native Who Changed the World

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County History Center (CCHC) announced that it will host the world premiere of the documentary The Mushroom Man Who Changed the World: G. Raymond Rettew on April 28th, 2023. This documentary highlights the life of West Chester native and chemist G. Raymond Rettew, whose discovery helped to change the course of modern medicine forever.

Produced by Doug Gahm and Deborah Divine, this film follows Rettew’s journey as he developed a method to mass produce penicillin, driven by a desire to find a solution to help save lives. His methods eventually helped save the lives of tens of thousands of wounded American and Allied troops during World War II.

“As producers, Deb and I strongly believe we have a unique opportunity to share this powerful story with others as part of the rich history of Chester County. ” said Doug Gahm, director and producer for The Mushroom Man Who Changed the World: G. Raymond Rettew. “It’s a story steeped in the history of the mushroom industry in Chester County and a story that evolved into one of the most important medical discoveries of its time.”

Conor Hepp, Chester County History Center added, “We are celebrating the life and work of an individual who impacted, not just his community or even the world, but humanity. How can you not be inspired by the story of a person who created such change from his garage lab?”

The Mushroom Man Who Changed the World: G. Raymond Rettew event will bring together renowned documentarians Deborah Divine and Doug Gahm, the Rettew and Shirk families –grandchildren of G. Raymond Rettew, and special guests from the community.

Attendees will be able to take part in a fundraising dinner along with a documentary premiere that pays homage to G. Raymond Rettew’s impressive accomplishments during his life followed by special recognitions in his honor.

The Chester County History Center served as a chief source of information for this exceptional production and knowledge acquired from it is paramount to both the medical and scientific communities as well as West Chester itself.
