United Way of Southern Chester County and Microsoft Launch AI Skill-A-Thon

KENNETT SQUARE, PA  — United Way of Southern Chester County, in collaboration with Microsoft, has initiated a groundbreaking AI Skill-A-Thon. This free, 30-day skilling competition aims to equip local professionals, job seekers, students, and employers with essential knowledge and competencies in artificial intelligence (AI).

The initiative offers individual participants the chance to earn professional certificates and win cash prizes up to $1,500. Non-profit agencies focused on health and human services in Southern Chester County can compete as teams, with opportunities to win cash prizes up to $5,000.

AI is transforming industries across the nation, making digital proficiency more critical than ever. Microsoft has already trained and certified over 12 million people globally in digital and AI skills. This collaboration seeks to extend those benefits to the Southern Chester County community.

“United Way of Southern Chester County promotes the health, education, and financial stability of every person within the nineteen townships and four boroughs of Southern Chester County,” stated Terry Vodery, CEO. “Through this partnership with Microsoft, we are empowering our community with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a digital age. This initiative is more than about training – it is about creating opportunities, closing the digital divide, and ensuring that every resident has the tools to succeed in an increasingly AI-driven world.”

All courses in the Skill-A-Thon are accessible online via smartphone, tablet, desktop, or laptop. Although the focus is on AI skills, participants can also explore courses on entry-level digital skills, soft skills, and essential role-based skills for various in-demand careers. The courses are available in both English and Spanish.

Participants can register in one of three age categories: 16-24 years old, 25-49 years old, and 50 years and older. Additionally, teams of up to 50 participants can compete. Registration opens on August 15, 2024.

The prize structure for individual categories is as follows:

  • First place: $1,500
  • Second place: $1,000
  • Third place: $600
  • Fourth place: $250

For the team category:

  • First place: $5,000
  • Second place: $3,000
  • Third place: $2,000

The AI Skill-A-Thon will commence on September 1 at 12:01 a.m. and conclude on September 30 at 11:59 p.m. local time. Local employers, educators, and non-profits are encouraged to share this initiative as a valuable resource for online training and skill development.
