HARRISBURG, PA — East Vincent Township has secured $100,000 in state funding for the development of Independence Park. The grant, awarded through the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program and administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, will support improvements aimed at expanding recreational opportunities for the community, including residents of the adjacent Southeastern Veteran’s Center.
The project includes plans to construct bocce ball and shuffleboard courts, install benches, and plant shade trees. Further enhancements include a 10-foot-wide path connecting all seven courts and an ADA-compliant, 5-foot-wide concrete path from the park’s northeast entrance at Dunlap Road to the recreation areas. This new pathway will serve as a secondary entrance and provide groundwork for future park connectivity to the Veteran’s Center.
“Independence Park is a great community resource,” said State Representative Paul Friel. “When public entities work together to improve our quality of life, it’s meaningful projects like this that get recognized for their value. Thank you to East Vincent Township for its work securing funding and creating something truly special.”
The grant will cover portions of construction and engineering costs for the project. Funding is sourced from natural gas drilling fees under the Marcellus Legacy Fund, which supports greenway, trail, park, and beautification developments throughout Pennsylvania.
Friel also encouraged other local organizations and public entities to seek assistance from his office when applying for state funding to advance community projects.
