State Rep. Christina Sappey Calls for Public Input on Proposed PECO Rate Hike

Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission

KENNETT SQUARE, PAState Rep. Christina Sappey, D-Chester, is urging local residents to voice their opinions at a public input hearing regarding PECO Energy Company’s proposed rate increases. The hearing, arranged by Sappey and the Public Utility Commission (PUC), offers a platform for consumers to express concerns about potential hikes in electric and natural gas rates.

“Residents’ voices need to be heard now, not after a rate increase,” Sappey emphasized. “We’re all impacted by potential rate increases, so it’s time to speak up.”

PECO Energy Company submitted a request to the PUC on March 28 to increase its rates, seeking an additional $575 million per year for electric distribution services and $111 million more per year for natural gas distribution. According to the Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate, if approved, these increases will significantly raise consumer costs.

The public hearing for Chester County residents is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, June 10, at the Kennett Square Borough Building, located at 600 S. Broad St. Attendees do not need to pre-register to testify; they can sign up on a sheet available in the hearing room.

Sappey encourages interested individuals to visit the PUC’s website for tips on offering testimony at public hearings and guidelines on handling exhibits during testimony. Residents with questions can contact Representative Sappey’s office via phone at 484-200-8264 or email repsappey@pahouse.net with “PECO rate increase hearing” in the subject line.

Rate increases by utility companies like PECO are significant because they directly affect household budgets. For many families, even small increases in utility costs can strain finances. Public input hearings allow residents to present their perspectives and provide the PUC with a better understanding of how rate changes impact the community.

Moreover, these hearings promote transparency and accountability. Utilities must justify their requests, and public scrutiny can help ensure that any rate hikes are necessary and fair. If residents feel that the increases are unjustified, their testimonies can prompt further review or reconsideration by the PUC.

The potential implications of PECO’s proposed rate hikes extend beyond individual households. Businesses, especially small ones, could also face higher operating costs, which might lead to increased prices for goods and services. This could ripple through the local economy, affecting overall economic health and consumer spending.

In conclusion, the upcoming hearing serves as a vital forum for Chester County residents to make their voices heard regarding PECO’s proposed rate increases. Active participation is essential to ensure that any decisions made reflect the community’s needs and concerns. As the date approaches, residents are encouraged to prepare their testimonies and attend the hearing to advocate for fair and reasonable utility rates.
