PHOENIXVILLE, PA — The Phoenixville Borough Police Department has received a significant financial boost in its efforts to bolster local law enforcement. The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) recently allocated $25,000 to the department as part of a statewide effort to strengthen public safety and improve recruitment of law enforcement officers.

The funding comes as part of PCCD’s Law Enforcement Recruitment Incentives solicitation, a program aimed at filling vacant law enforcement positions across the Commonwealth. Since the program’s inception in October 2023, 51 law enforcement agencies have received more than $2 million in funding to hire and train approximately 412 new officers.

“Every Pennsylvanian deserves to feel safe in their communities, and making sure communities have enough police officers on the beat is a key component for public safety,” said Lt. Gov. Austin Davis, chair of PCCD.

For Phoenixville, the funding will provide vital resources needed to support Act 120 training and recruitment activities for new officers. Act 120 is a mandatory training program for municipal police officers in Pennsylvania, provided through the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (MPOETC).

The grant program, established under Act 54 of 2022, offers eligible law enforcement agencies up to $7,000 per new officer to cover the costs associated with Act 120 training. Alternatively, if an agency already hires officers who are Act 120 trained or covers the training costs, they can apply for up to $5,000 per new officer to support stipends, signing bonuses, or marketing efforts.

This initiative is critical in bolstering law enforcement in areas with high rates of violent crime and low clearance rates for such crimes. By prioritizing these areas, the PCCD aims to enhance public safety where it’s needed most.

For Phoenixville, this funding represents a significant step toward enhancing local law enforcement capabilities. By enabling the recruitment and training of new officers, it will bolster the department’s ability to maintain law and order, deter crime, and ensure public safety.

The implications of this are far-reaching. A well-staffed and well-trained police force can enhance community security, deter potential criminals, and improve response times in emergencies. Moreover, it can foster a sense of security among residents, knowing that their community is well-protected.

As applications continue to be considered on a rolling basis, other eligible law enforcement agencies across Pennsylvania are being encouraged to apply. The goal is clear: to create safer communities, build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, and ensure every Pennsylvanian feels safe in their own neighborhood. For Phoenixville, this recent allocation of funds marks a positive step in that direction.
