OXFORD, PA — In a heartfelt ceremony that underscored the valor and dedication of first responders, Oxford Borough Police Officers Karlianna Eller and Field Training Officer Scott Richards were named Heroes of the Year for 2023. The honor, bestowed by Homes for Heroes with sponsorship from local real estate specialists Ken Pitts and Kim Sheehan, recognized the officers’ extraordinary courage during a devastating fire in downtown Oxford last September.
The Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce hosted the awards luncheon on March 28, 2024, at Victory Brewing in Kennett Square, where members of the community gathered to celebrate the bravery of Southern Chester County’s first responders. Among the attendees was Sergeant Christopher Coverly of the Oxford Borough Police Department, who shared a gripping account of the night that challenged and showcased the best of Oxford’s emergency services.
On the night of September 13, 2023, a fire alarm rang out from the unit block of South Third Street, leading Officers Eller and Richards to the scene within minutes. They discovered large flames engulfing the roofs of multiple buildings and immediately sprang into action, going door-to-door to evacuate residents from their apartments. Their swift and decisive actions under pressure were captured on body camera footage, which Sergeant Coverly described as a testament to their heroism amidst the chaos and fear of the night.
The fire, which displaced 29 families, totaling 103 individuals, required a massive response effort involving the Union Fire Department, Oxford Ambulance, Medic 94, and over 55 outside mutual aid departments. The collective heroism of these responders prevented what could have been an even greater tragedy, underscoring the critical role of coordinated emergency services in times of crisis.
In his remarks, Coverly also shared words from Mayor Philip Harris, who was unable to attend the event. Mayor Harris expressed his deep appreciation for the officers’ unwavering courage and dedication, stating that their actions serve as a shining example of the commitment to safety, justice, and security within the community. He extended his gratitude on behalf of Oxford Borough, highlighting the pride and confidence their bravery inspires in the police force and the broader community.
The recognition of Officers Eller and Richards as Heroes of the Year shines a light on the often-unsung heroes who risk their lives to protect others. Their story is a powerful reminder of the importance of first responders and the sacrifices they make to ensure the well-being of their communities. As Oxford continues to recover and rebuild from the September fire, the bravery of these officers and their fellow first responders remains a beacon of hope and resilience.
