KENNETT SQUARE, PA — The Kennett Square Memorial Day Parade, the largest of its kind in Chester County, will commence at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26, 2025. Beginning at South and Union Streets and concluding at Union Hill Cemetery, the parade is a cherished tradition, dating back to 1948, that honors those who gave their lives in service to the nation.
This year’s parade features three distinguished Grand Marshals, each representing a different branch of the military and periods of service. Ralph D. Doss, a Navy veteran of World War II who celebrated his 100th birthday earlier this year, served aboard the USS Sigourney and USS Duluth. Ronald L. Taylor, a Marine Corps Corporal, fought in 12 major Vietnam operations and was awarded multiple honors, including the Marine Achievement Medal with “V” for valor. James “Mike” DeFazio, an Air Force Crew Chief during the Vietnam War, provided critical support for aircraft operations.
“It’s events like the Memorial Day Parade that bring our community together to reflect on the sacrifices of those who served,” said Dr. Gretchen Rickards, a board member of Kennett Collaborative. “We’re proud to preserve traditions that honor our nation’s heroes and celebrate our shared history.”
Kennett Collaborative, in partnership with American Legion Post 491 and VFW Post 5467, organizes the parade with support from local volunteers and sponsors. The 2025 lead sponsor is the Mushroom Festival, a long-time supporter celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
Adding a new dimension to the event, live bilingual announcements will be featured. English narrations will take place along the 100 block of East State Street, while Spanish announcements will occur at the 500 block of South Union Street.
Spectators are encouraged to take advantage of free parking at the Borough of Kennett Square’s parking garage on East Linden Street. To minimize traffic issues, attendees should plan to arrive early as street closures begin at 9 a.m.
The parade committee welcomes participation from veterans, military organizations, community groups, local businesses, entertainers, and owners of antique vehicles. Applications to join the parade are currently being accepted. Visit kennettmemorialdayparade.com to complete your application form.
Marking its 77th year, the Kennett Square Memorial Day Parade continues to unify the community in remembrance and respect for its veterans. Looking ahead, organizers plan to expand participation and enrich the parade experience, ensuring it remains a meaningful and inclusive celebration for generations to come.
