WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County’s agricultural leaders took center stage this week as AgConnect honored Bob and Ryan Rohrer of Rob-Roy Farm as Farmers of the Year and Lisa McNamara with the Duncan Allison Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award. These awards celebrate exceptional contributions to farming, sustainability, and education in the community.

Bob and Ryan Rohrer: Mastering Sustainability on the Family Farm

Bob and Ryan Rohrer, the father-son duo behind Rob-Roy Farm in Nottingham, were celebrated for their visionary approach to sustainable farming. Bob, who began farming in Chester County in 1952 and took over Rob-Roy Farm in 1966, has devoted his life to cultivating the land and building his legacy. Through innovative conservation practices like planting cover crops on all their acres, the Rohrers ensure healthier soils, better water retention, and natural weed control for future generations.

“We’ve seen the value of cover crops in improving the land for future generations,” said Ryan Rohrer. “It’s not just about today; it’s about preserving our farm’s productivity for years to come.”

The Rohrers’ commitment to farming goes far beyond their fields. They volunteer extensively with Chester County 4-H programs, mentor young farmers, and advocate for the industry through the Chester/Delaware County Farm Bureau. “Farming has been my life – faith, family, and farming,” Bob Rohrer reflected. “It’s humbling to be chosen, especially when I know so many other deserving farmers in Chester County.”

Lisa McNamara: Transforming Agricultural Education

Lisa McNamara, a leader who reshaped agricultural and technical education in Chester County, was recognized for over three decades of extraordinary work with the Octorara Area School District. Under her leadership, the district expanded its career and technical education (CTE) offerings from eight to 12 programs, emphasizing agriculture as a critical career path.

“When I stepped into the world of career and technical education, it was like discovering an entirely new career within education itself,” McNamara said. “Agriculture and CTE programs are vital pathways that open incredible opportunities for our students, many of whom don’t come from agricultural backgrounds.”

McNamara led efforts to modernize the district’s education infrastructure, adding tools like high tunnels, precision farming equipment, and barn renovations for hands-on learning. She also spearheaded the OA-BEST Expo, turning it into a celebrated community event that connects students to agricultural careers.

“This recognition is incredibly meaningful,” McNamara shared. “It’s a reflection of the hard work and dedication of everyone I’ve worked with over the years. It’s been a privilege to help create opportunities for our students.”

Celebrating Excellence in Agriculture

Chester County Commissioners and AgConnect leaders praised the honorees for their lasting impact on the agricultural community. These awards recognize individuals who go above and beyond, whether in the fields or the classroom, to ensure the future of farming is bright and sustainable.
