BRYN MAWR, PA — Essential Utilities Inc. (NYSE: WTRG) has been named to USA TODAY’s prestigious list of America’s Climate Leaders 2025, marking its third consecutive year receiving the honor. This recognition, developed in partnership with Statista, celebrates companies achieving significant year-over-year reductions in greenhouse gas emissions intensity.
“Being named one of America’s Climate Leaders for the third straight year validates the efforts made by every member of the Essential team to responsibly provide the natural resources our customers need to thrive,” said Chris Franklin, chairman and CEO of Essential Utilities.
The company has achieved a 25% reduction in absolute emissions through 2023, making strong strides toward its target of a 60% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2019 levels. Strategies supporting these goals include replacing aged, leak-prone natural gas pipelines, improving methane detection and repair processes, and expanding the use of renewable energy in water and wastewater operations.
Essential’s infrastructure improvement plan includes replacing 3,000 miles of natural gas pipelines with advanced materials designed to minimize corrosion and leaks. Its focus on modernization has not only cut emissions but also strengthened the reliability and safety of its services across its nine-state operational footprint.
The announcement comes during Essential’s Earth Day initiatives, which include volunteer events involving hundreds of employees. Efforts span from green space cleanups to planting thousands of trees and flowers, with the company contributing over $1 million to conservation and environmental partnerships.
By both reducing operational emissions and supporting community sustainability efforts, Essential Utilities demonstrates its commitment to responsibly delivering the water, wastewater, and natural gas services customers rely on. Looking ahead, the company aims to continue driving environmental progress while investing in infrastructure and renewable energy for future generations.
