PHILADELPHIA, PA — Aramark Correctional Services is marking the 20th anniversary of its IN2WORK (I2W) program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to equip incarcerated individuals with vital skills and certifications to support their reentry into society. Since its inception in 1999, the program has grown to include over 290 initiatives in 32 states, graduating more than 14,000 participants.
Initially focused on food safety training, the program has expanded over the decades to incorporate warehouse and retail education, offering certifications such as the ServSafe Managers credential from the National Restaurant Association and a Supply Chain Specialist certificate from the National Retail Federation. Training combines classroom instruction and hands-on experience, reflecting a phased approach to skill development.
“We always look for opportunities to make a difference, and IN2WORK does just that,” said Tim Barttrum, President and CEO of Aramark Correctional Services. “It has been a privilege to see it grow from a feature we offered to an integral part of our mission.”
The program’s impact extends beyond technical training. IN2WORK aims to reduce recidivism by instilling confidence and empowering participants to rebuild their lives. Graduates and their families are also eligible for scholarships, with more than $170,000 awarded over the past five years to help them pursue additional education.
“There is growing recognition that incarceration alone is not an effective solution to reducing recidivism,” said Nicole McVaugh, Director of the IN2WORK program. “Reentry is a place where small victories can make a big difference.”
The program has consistently improved morale and self-worth among participants, fostering safer environments within correctional facilities. Reflecting on its evolution, IN2WORK Manager Belinda Peterson noted, “We provide so much more than a book and a certification. Our program gives hope—for themselves, their families, and their communities.”
With two decades of success, Aramark remains committed to expanding the reach and impact of IN2WORK, ensuring justice-impacted individuals have the tools and support they need for a brighter future.
