HARRISBURG, PA — Amid the closure of some federally-operated campgrounds due to staffing shortages, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is underscoring the availability of the state’s expansive network of parks and forests, welcoming campers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts to take advantage of year-round recreation opportunities.

Home to 124 state parks and 2.2 million acres of state forests, Pennsylvania’s public lands offer diverse outdoor activities, from hiking and fishing to camping and wildlife observation, all without entrance fees. With over 7,100 campsites, as well as modern cabins, yurts, and tent sites, there is a wide range of experiences available. DCNR is currently assessing nearby facilities to ensure capacity is sufficient to meet the increased demand.

“Pennsylvania is home to an extensive network of state parks and forests, offering endless opportunities for camping, hiking, and outdoor recreation,” said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “Whether you’re looking for a quiet retreat in the woods, a campsite by the water, or a modern cabin with amenities, our state parks and forests have something for everyone.”

Increased Investments in Public Lands

Under the Shapiro Administration, Pennsylvania has seen historic investments to modernize and enhance the state’s public lands. Governor Josh Shapiro’s $112 million funding initiative has resulted in major upgrades to campground infrastructure, expanded opportunities, and improved accessibility across the Commonwealth’s parks and forests. Recent upgrades include the reopening of Tuttle Point Campground at Pymatuning State Park and new facilities at Bald Eagle State Park, ensuring visitors have access to modern amenities.

These enhancements not only improve the visitor experience but also support Pennsylvania’s $19 billion outdoor recreation economy, which sustains 168,000 jobs. To further bolster this sector, the state has launched the Office of Outdoor Recreation, tasked with fostering growth and collaboration across outdoor industries.
