HARRISBURG, PA — On Friday, March 21, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) introduced a bold new initiative aimed at safeguarding the state’s extensive forestlands for future generations. DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn and Pennsylvania State Forester Seth Cassell announced the launch of Forests for All – A Plan for Pennsylvania’s Forests and People, during an event dedicated to promoting sustainable forestry.

This forward-thinking strategy is designed to protect Pennsylvania’s 17 million acres of forests while enhancing their accessibility and resilience. Speaking at the announcement, Secretary Dunn emphasized the multifaceted benefits forests provide to the Commonwealth. “Our forests offer Pennsylvanians clean air and water, jobs, wood products, and outdoor recreation opportunities that support our economy,” she said. “It’s important that we anticipate and respond to potential opportunities and challenges and use our resources wisely.”

The plan builds on the achievements of the earlier Penn’s Woods strategy from 1995, which created a foundation for better resource management and technical support for private landowners. According to Cassell, who is also the Director of the Bureau of Forestry, the new initiative reflects a commitment to modern practices. “Just as forests evolve and adapt, so must we,” he stated. “This plan reinforces our dedication to resource management and stronger connections with the people who live, work, and recreate in Pennsylvania’s forests.”

The strategy is structured around three core goals:

  1. Strengthening Resource Management: Implementing measures to ensure the health and productivity of forests for future generations.
  2. Enhancing Public Engagement: Expanding efforts to connect Pennsylvanians with forests and promoting awareness of their benefits.
  3. Investing in Workforce Development: Supporting forestry professionals, partnerships, and resources to advance conservation goals.

The Bureau of Forestry currently manages 2.2 million acres of state forest land across 50 counties. Its responsibilities also extend to assisting private landowners in planning sustainable management for an additional 12 million acres of privately owned forestland. Notable areas of focus include wildfire prevention, watershed protection, promoting biodiversity, and sustainable timber management.

This comprehensive plan highlights the critical role forests play in shaping Pennsylvania’s environment, economy, and way of life, offering a roadmap to ensure these vital resources remain intact for generations.
