PennDOT Announces Bridge Joint Sealing Operations on I-76

Interstate 76

PHILADELPHIA, PA —The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced upcoming bridge joint sealing work as part of a $37.9 million project aimed at resurfacing and repairing nearly five miles of westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway). This comprehensive effort spans over 20 bridges and associated ramps across Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County.

To facilitate the work, PennDOT has outlined a schedule of travel restrictions and detours for motorists. Beginning Monday, March 24, and continuing through Friday, March 28, lane closures will be implemented between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM on I-76 westbound, specifically between the Montgomery Drive and U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) interchanges.

Additionally, ramp closures and detours are planned as follows:

  • From Monday, March 31, through Friday, April 4, the ramp from Spring Garden Street to westbound I-76 will be closed. Motorists will be directed to follow a detour via 33rd Street, Mantua Avenue, 34th Street, and Girard Avenue.
  • From Monday, April 7, through Friday, April 11, the westbound I-76 ramp to Girard Avenue (Exit 342) will be closed. Detours will route traffic through 30th Street (Exit 345), Arch Street, 30th Street, JFK Boulevard, Market Street, 38th Street, Lancaster Avenue, and Belmont Avenue to access Girard Avenue.

Motorists should anticipate significant delays and are encouraged to plan for extra travel time when passing through work zones. All construction schedules are weather dependent, and PennDOT urges drivers to remain patient and exercise caution while navigating detours.
