NEW CASTLE, DE — Three juveniles have been charged by Delaware State Police following an alleged assault at Calvin R. McCullough Middle School in New Castle last week, which left one student hospitalized with serious injuries.

The incident occurred on the morning of February 28, 2025, at the middle school located on Chase Avenue. State police reports indicate that a fight allegedly broke out among students, during which a 13-year-old student from New Castle and another 13-year-old student from Wilmington repeatedly struck a 13-year-old victim on the head with a metal Stanley cup. A 12-year-old male student from New Castle is also accused of striking the victim with his hands.

The altercation was stopped by school staff, who separated the individuals involved. The suspects were subsequently handed over to their guardians while authorities conducted an investigation. The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for significant injuries to her head.

Following a detailed investigation by Youth Aid detectives from Delaware State Police Troop 2, warrants were obtained against the three juveniles. Two of the suspects—a 13-year-old female from New Castle and a 13-year-old female from Wilmington—turned themselves in and were each charged with multiple felonies, including second-degree assault, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, second-degree conspiracy, and disorderly conduct.

The 13-year-old from New Castle surrendered on March 5 and was arraigned in New Castle County Family Court. She was released to a guardian under a $7,500 unsecured bond. The 13-year-old suspect from Wilmington turned herself in the following day and received similar charges, alongside the same bond conditions.
