Major Gun and Drug Bust in Wilmington – Two Suspects Arrested with Shock Trove of Evidence

WILMINGTON, DE—Two men have been arrested following a police investigation that uncovered firearms, drugs, and cash in a Wilmington home.

On the evening of March 3, Wilmington police executed a search warrant on the 1900 block of West 3rd Street as part of an investigation led by the Drug, Organized Crime and Vice Division in collaboration with the Gun Intelligence Unit. During the search, authorities recovered two 9mm handguns, a 12-gauge shotgun, 1,818.6 grams of marijuana, drug packaging materials, and $1,628 in currency.

Jose Gavina, 26, and Waldemar Ortiz, 25, were taken into custody without incident.

Gavina faces multiple felony charges, including three counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony and Possession of a Controlled Substance in Tier 2 Quantity, among others. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and is held at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $82,100 cash-only bail.

Ortiz has been charged with several offenses, including Possession with the Intent to Deliver and Conspiracy (Second Degree). He was arraigned in the same court and was released after posting $7,100 cash-only bail.

Officials emphasize that charges are merely allegations. All suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
