NORTH EAST, MD — Khalid Gates, a proud alumnus of Cecil College, has achieved what many young athletes can only dream of—playing professional basketball overseas. Gates recently completed his first season with KK Marsonia, a team in Croatia’s Prva Liga (Premiere League). Reflecting on his time abroad, Gates shared insights into the challenges and rewards of adapting to European basketball and life in a foreign country.
“It was great playing in Croatia,” the 6’7” forward from Washington, DC, remarked. The game tested him with a more physical and fast-paced style compared to the structured play he was used to in the U.S. The high-energy, rapid-transition approach demanded constant focus and agility, qualities Gates eagerly embraced to compete with teams across Europe.
Off the court, Gates found himself adjusting to Croatia’s quieter, rural lifestyle—a sharp contrast to the bustling environment of his hometown. Daily communication was also a hurdle, as learning the local language proved challenging. Still, Gates viewed these differences as opportunities to expand his global perspective, stating that the experience enriched him both personally and professionally.
During his season, Gates earned accolades, including being named Player of the Week and finishing as the league’s top scorer. Beyond his impressive on-court performance, extensive travel across Europe during the season gave him the chance to explore new cultures, further shaping his international outlook.
Gates’ path to professional basketball began at Cecil College, where he left a lasting impact, scoring 671 points in his career, including 452 points during the 2021-2022 season. Returning for an alumni basketball game, he expressed deep gratitude for his alma mater, praising the coaching staff, teammates, and host family who supported him along the way. “Everyone here has been important in helping me get to where I am today,” Gates said.
Cecil College head men’s basketball coach Ed Durham applauded Gates for his growth on and off the court. “It’s a true testament to his dedication. Not only has he become an exceptional player, but he’s also a humble person. I’m extremely proud of him,” Durham said.
Before playing in Croatia, Gates honed his skills during a tour in China, where he competed against top-level teams to gain exposure among international scouts. These experiences, combined with his standout performances in Europe, have opened doors for the next chapter of his career. With highlight reels from his Croatian season and interest from new management, Gates is now weighing his options for future contracts.
Reflecting on his career so far, Gates remains focused but driven by a desire for further growth. “I have options now; I’m just waiting to see which ones will benefit me the most,” he said.
Looking Ahead
With his international achievements and the unwavering support of his Cecil College community, Khalid Gates stands ready to take on the next challenge in his basketball career. His journeys in China and Croatia have not only sharpened his athletic abilities but also built a foundation for success that transcends the court. The future is bright for this determined player, whose story continues to inspire both aspiring athletes and the Cecil College family.
