MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Work on a $54.3 million reconstruction and widening project on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) and Germantown Pike continues as construction aims to modernize and enhance a 1.8-mile stretch of roadway. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) confirmed that the project spans from Johnson Highway to Swede Road, affecting Norristown, East Norriton, and Whitpain townships.
Currently, lane closures are in place along U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in both directions between Township Line Road and Johnson Highway and on Germantown Pike near Dekalb Pike and Swede Road. Drivers are advised to allow extra time due to potential delays caused by backups and slow travel through construction zones.
Key improvements for the project include reconstructing and widening U.S. 202 from two lanes to two northbound lanes, one southbound lane, and a center turn lane within the work area. Additional upgrades feature the installation of five-foot bicycle lanes, construction of new sidewalks, rebuilding of a bridge and a box culvert, two sound and retaining walls, new traffic signals, and updated signage. Drainage enhancements and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will also be incorporated to improve traffic management.
This effort is part of a broader multi-phase initiative to upgrade a significant 9.1-mile section of U.S. 202 between Johnson Highway in Norristown and Route 309 in Montgomery Township.
