PHILADELPHIA, PA — The German Society of Pennsylvania is set to host the 12th Annual Philly Bierfest, a signature event that highlights the region’s deep brewing history and vibrant cultural traditions. Taking place on Saturday, February 22, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., the festival brings together beer enthusiasts, community members, and families to enjoy a celebration of German-style lagers, live entertainment, and community-focused activities.

Recognized by USA Today’s Reader’s Choice Awards as one of the top ten beer festivals, Philly Bierfest underscores Pennsylvania’s crucial role in producing and championing German-inspired beer styles.

“Locals may not realize that Pennsylvania brewers lead the nation in championing beer styles of German heritage, from refreshing pilsners to malty doppelbocks,” said Victory Brewing Company president Bill Covaleski, a founding member of the Brewers of Pennsylvania. “Bierfest is a perfect showcase for what should be a point of pride for Philadelphia’s beer lovers.”

A Beer Lover’s Paradise

Held at the German Society of Pennsylvania’s historic 611 Spring Garden Street campus, the event features over 50 locally brewed German-inspired beers from 25 Pennsylvania breweries, including popular names like Tröegs Brewing Co., Yards Brewing Co., and Sly Fox Brewing Co. Complementing these are more than three dozen imported German beers from renowned breweries such as Ayinger, Bitburger, and the historic Bavarian State Brewery at Weihenstephan.

For guests seeking healthier or alcohol-free options, the popular “NoLo Bar” will return, serving low-alcohol and zero-proof beers such as Bitburger 0.0.

Tickets range from $59 for general admission to $99 for the VIP Plus experience, which includes early access and a 12 p.m. guided tasting led by Bierfest co-founder and beer expert Marnie Old. Non-drinkers and designated drivers can attend for $35 via “beer-less” tickets.

Six Floors of Festivities

Philly Bierfest goes beyond beer to deliver a fully immersive experience. Spread across six floors, activities include live music, roller derby arm wrestling, axe-throwing, and unique contests such as “Best Legs in Lederhosen.” Local favorites like Polkadelphia’s Oompah-Funk and the thigh-slapping UGH Schühplattler dancers will keep the energy high.

Attendees can also explore the PA Cheese Cave hosted by the PA Cheese Guild and enjoy offerings from the PA Cider Bar. New attractions this year include the Bitburger BRÜ Balcony, offering exclusive access to beer tastings and German-inspired bites for VIP guests.

Festival organizers have also introduced the “Home Sweet HomeBräu Taste-Off,” which invites homebrewers to showcase their German-style creations. The winner will have the chance to collaborate with My Local Brew Works on a commercial batch to be featured at next year’s festival.

Honoring Brewing Heritage

Philly Bierfest serves as a powerful reminder of Pennsylvania’s German brewing legacy. Even the smallest breweries in the state emphasize German-inspired techniques, reflecting Germany’s enduring cultural influence in the region.

“Many Philadelphians don’t know that Pennsylvania is home to the largest American-owned brewery in the USA—Yuengling & Sons Brewery in Pottsville—which is known for their lagers,” Covaleski pointed out.

The event also includes a special 2025 German Beer Ambassador Award presentation to renowned beer and whiskey writer Lew Bryson, further bridging the historical with the contemporary.

Looking Ahead

Philly Bierfest’s enduring popularity lies in its ability to blend tradition with modern community engagement. By celebrating Pennsylvania’s heritage as a brewing powerhouse, the festival fosters pride, connection, and a shared appreciation for the art of beer-making.

“Bierfest is about more than beer,” said Tony Michels, executive vice-president of the German Society of Pennsylvania and event co-founder. “It’s about celebrating culture, history, and community together.”

With its dynamic lineup of activities, world-class beer selection, and family-friendly atmosphere, the 12th Annual Philly Bierfest is set to inspire attendees while strengthening the bonds that make Pennsylvania a leader in both brewing and cultural connectivity.
