COATESVILLE, PA — Coatesville-area high school juniors, who have their sights set on college have the chance for life-changing mentoring and scholarship opportunities, courtesy of the Newlin Foundation.

A free information session to review program details and answer questions will be held Thursday, January 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the Newlin Office located at 190 West Lincoln Highway in Coatesville.

The Foundation not only helps students gain acceptance into college, but to graduate from college. In addition to providing students with five years of comprehensive mentorship and guidance, scholarships may be awarded to narrow the gap between the financial aid the student secures and their tuition and housing costs. Assistance can be provided to students looking to attend a four-year college program, community college, trade school or certification program.

To be eligible, applicants must live within the Coatesville Area School District and be in their junior year of high school. Complete eligibility details and the online application form can be found at newlinfoundation.org/eligibility-application/

Applications received by January 31, 2025, will be reviewed, and prospective scholars will be interviewed by a committee comprising Newlin Foundation staff and trustees, along with community advisors.

“Becoming a Newlin Scholar is a premier opportunity for Coatesville-area students, and the information session is the perfect way for students, parents, and guardians to get a full understanding of how the program works and the many benefits it provides,” says Regina Lewis, Trustee, The Newlin Foundation. “Newlin Scholars receive far more than a monetary scholarship, they receive coaching in preparation to attend college in addition to mentorship through up to four years during college enrollment. By taking this important step during their junior years, students are setting themselves up for successful outcomes.”

Once accepted into the program, Newlin Scholars and their parents or guardians participate in workshops, informational sessions, and special forums facilitated by professional staff throughout their senior year of high school and continuing throughout enrollment in college or post-secondary education. All aspects of preparing for college admission including securing financial aid, managing educational costs, and adjusting to college life are covered. Scholars receive ongoing guidance to help with their transition from high school to college and to monitor their academic progress, with the ultimate goal of graduating with a four-year degree, two-year associate degree, or trade-school certification.

Generally, five new students (juniors) are accepted into the program each year and will be notified by March 15, 2025. The new Newlin Scholars will also be invited to participate in the 2025 Summer Team Building activity with those scholars who are already attending or enrolled in college.

“The Newlin Foundation helped me with the process of transitioning into college from high school, as well as helping me decide what school was most suitable for me,” says Newlin Scholar Sarah Ramirez, who is a graduate of West Chester University.” Not only did it help me through my transition, but it helped me develop more as a person in general. They don’t just give you money, they mentor you, provide you with support, encouragement, and guidance during such an overwhelming chapter in your life.”
