Maryland Man Arrested in Chilling Wilmington Murder Case

WILMINGTON, DE — A Maryland man has been arrested in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred in Wilmington in January 2024. Police say the incident took the life of 23-year-old Makhi Swanson on the 300 block of North Scott Street.

Officers from the Wilmington Police Department‘s Uniformed Services Division responded to the scene on January 22, where Swanson was found with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.

Following an extensive investigation led by Detective Brandon Mosley of the Criminal Investigations Division, 20-year-old Naim Hassan-El of Snow Hill, Maryland, was identified as a suspect. The case was presented to the New Castle County Grand Jury on January 29, 2024, resulting in an indictment.

Authorities report that Hassan-El was arrested on October 30, 2024, in Worcester County, Maryland, and extradited to Delaware on December 31, 2024. The charges brought against him include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and first-degree reckless endangering.

Hassan-El was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and is being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $2,000,000 cash-only bail.

It is important to note that these charges are allegations, and Hassan-El is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
