HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) have released their crash and enforcement data for the 2024 Christmas travel period, covering December 24 to 26. Over the three-day span, troopers investigated 495 crashes, resulting in one fatality and 81 injuries. Impaired driving contributed to 27 of these incidents, though none were fatal.

Troopers conducted significant enforcement efforts during the holiday travel period, making 138 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI). Additionally, state police issued 720 citations for speeding, 72 for seat belt violations, and 19 for improper child safety seat use.

Compared to the 2023 Christmas travel period, which recorded 411 crashes and three fatalities, this year saw an increase in overall crashes but a decrease in fatalities. However, DUI arrests dropped from 200 in 2023 to 138 in 2024, while citations for speeding and seat belt violations also declined from the previous year. Notably, citations for other traffic offenses increased to 3,295 this year, up from 2,877 in 2023.

With New Year’s Eve celebrations approaching, PSP stresses the importance of safe driving. Troopers will patrol for impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. Travelers are urged to plan ahead, particularly if alcohol consumption is part of their festivities, by arranging for alternative transportation or a designated driver.
