DOVER, DE — The Delaware Prescribed Fire Council is set to host a free “Learn & Burn” workshop to promote understanding and acceptance of prescribed fire as a critical land management tool. The event will take place on Friday, January 31, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Redden State Forest, located at 18074 Redden Forest Drive, Georgetown, DE 19947.
According to Sam Topper, Wildland Fire Supervisor for the Delaware Forest Service, prescribed burns are an effective and sustainable method for managing forest ecosystems. “Demonstrating responsible use of fire is an important step in the Delaware Forest Service’s plan to increase public acceptance,” Topper said, highlighting the importance of smoke management and weather monitoring in ensuring safety and efficacy.
The workshop will provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of prescribed fire’s ecological benefits, such as controlling invasive plant species and improving soil quality. Educational presentations at the historic Redden Education Center will cover topics including the legal framework for prescribed burns, safety protocols, and managing smoke and weather conditions. If weather permits, participants will observe a live fire demonstration.
Space for the event is limited, and advanced registration is required to ensure availability and an accurate lunch count. Interested individuals are encouraged to register online to secure their spot.
