$81,000 Heist Shocker: Wilmington Man Arrested in High-Stakes Theft Case

WILMINGTON, DE — Law enforcement investigators have arrested a Wilmington man in connection with a significant financial crime involving alleged theft and fraud.

On December 3, at approximately 1:00 p.m., officers from the Wilmington Police Department responded to the 900 block of North Market Street following a report of theft. Upon investigation, it was alleged that $81,000 had been unlawfully taken. The case was assigned to Detective Michael Hayman of the Criminal Investigations Division for further examination.

Detective Hayman’s investigation identified 35-year-old Vannia Chatt Jr. as a suspect in the case. Warrants were subsequently obtained for his arrest. On December 12, police executed a search warrant at a residence on the 900 block of Wright Street, where Chatt was apprehended without incident.

Chatt now faces multiple charges, including Theft Over $50,000, Attempted Theft Over $50,000, three counts of Identity Theft, Attempted Theft Over $1,500, Attempted Theft Under $1,500, and three counts of Unlawful Use of a Payment Card.

Following his arraignment in New Castle County Court of Common Pleas, Chatt was released on $61,000 unsecured bail.

Authorities remind the public that criminal allegations remain unproven until adjudicated in court, and all individuals are presumed innocent unless found guilty.
