PHILADELPHIA, PA — Peter J. Katsufrakis, MD, MBA, President and CEO of NBME, has been honored as one of the Philadelphia Business Journal’s 2024 Most Admired CEOs. This prestigious recognition highlights his leadership at NBME and his impact on the Greater Philadelphia region.
The award celebrates leaders who excel in organizational impact, community service, and regional influence. Dr. Katsufrakis was recognized alongside 24 other honorees at a special event on December 12.
Reflecting on the recognition, Dr. Katsufrakis credited his team’s dedication and talent. “I am honored to have been selected for this recognition, but it would not have happened without the exceptional performance and dedication of NBME’s staff, leadership, volunteers and governance. Since joining NBME in 2007, Dr. Katsufrakis has led significant organizational changes, particularly in advancing workplace culture. Under his leadership, NBME earned certification as a Great Place to Work® for two consecutive years. This year, 85% of employees surveyed said NBME is a great workplace—a remarkable 7% increase over last year.

Under his guidance, NBME’s Community Collaborations and Contributions programs have provided vital resources to underserved learners, seeking to expand access to medical education and promote health equity.
His dedication to community impact is rooted in years of experience as a family physician. Early in his career, he played an important role in training clinicians to care for HIV patients during the height of the epidemic, an experience that shaped his commitment to education and advocacy.
A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Katsufrakis also earned his MBA from the University of Southern California. He remains a licensed physician in Pennsylvania and California and actively participates in several professional organizations.
