WEST CHESTER, PA — State Representative Chris Pielli, D-Chester, marked the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge at a ceremony held Monday at Fort Indiantown Gap, paying tribute to local World War II veterans for their sacrifices in one of history’s most pivotal battles.
Fought from December 16, 1944, through January 25, 1945, in the Ardennes region of Europe, the Battle of the Bulge was the largest U.S. ground battle of World War II. The historic confrontation resulted in over 80,000 American casualties but served as a decisive victory for Allied forces, hastening the end of the war. Among those who fought were troops from Pennsylvania’s 28th Infantry Division. Overwhelmed and outnumbered at the start of the German offensive, these soldiers successfully delayed enemy advances long enough for critical reinforcements, including the 101st Airborne Division, to reach Bastogne before it was encircled.
Last year, Pielli introduced House Resolution 275, designating December 16 as Battle of the Bulge Day in Pennsylvania. The resolution not only recognized the efforts of Pennsylvania soldiers in the historic battle but also directed the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to produce educational materials commemorating the anniversary.
“Pennsylvania’s 28th Infantry Division played a vital role in holding the line during the Battle of the Bulge, often sacrificing everything to protect the freedom we hold dear,” Pielli stated. “Their bravery allowed the Allies crucial time to consolidate and turn the tide against the German forces. These sacrifices ensured victory at Bastogne and ultimately sealed the defeat of the Third Reich.”
Pielli has also partnered with West Chester University’s Department of Geography and Planning to create a database mapping the experiences of soldiers during the battle. This project engages staff and students in collecting stories, memories, and accounts from veterans and their families to ensure the legacy of their service endures for future generations.
Through initiatives like these, Pielli is working to preserve the often-overlooked contributions of Pennsylvania troops while honoring the courage and sacrifice of all who served in this critical turning point of World War II.
