Pennsylvania Honors Veterans with 1,364 Wreaths at Memorial Cemetery

PA Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home Celebrates Wreaths Across America

ANNVILLE, PA — A powerful tradition of remembrance unfolded at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Erie as the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home (PSSH) joined the national Wreaths Across America program on Saturday. Community members and hundreds of volunteers came together to lay 1,364 wreaths to honor the sacrifices of service members interred there, some dating back to the Civil War.

“We are proud to participate in the Wreaths Across America program each year, as we value the importance of honoring and remembering each and every veteran buried in our cemetery,” said PSSH Commandant Cheri Spacht. “This tradition of wreath laying helps us to never forget the legacy of service and sacrifice made by our nation’s veterans.”

A Living Tribute

The event, part of a national effort spanning more than 4,500 locations, saw active participation from the local community. Thanks to donations from individuals and organizations, the wreaths were placed with care and reverence. Veterans and volunteers came together in solemn unity, reflecting on the contributions and sacrifices of those who served.

The ceremony began with the Seneca High School JR AFROTC posting the colors, a stirring tribute to the traditions of military service. To further mark the occasion, representatives from all branches of the U.S. military placed symbolic wreaths, honoring the collective sacrifice of those who served in defense of the country.

A Legacy of Service

The ceremony was hosted at the cemetery, which is unique as the only veterans cemetery maintained by one of Pennsylvania’s six veterans homes. Established in 1886, it serves as the enduring resting place for service members spanning generations, from the Civil War era to more recent times.

Honoring Their Sacrifice

The Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home plays an essential role in providing a space to honor the legacies of veterans. For the families and volunteers involved, the Wreaths Across America event is more than a tradition; it is a heartfelt reminder of bravery, sacrifice, and duty.
